Teaching Philosophy

I firmly believe that all students have the ability to learn to speak another language. Learning a language, however, does not come through textbooks, grammar drills, verb conjugation tables, and endless vocabulary lists. Research and years of experience show that students learn best by actually using the language to communicate with others.

I teach in accordance with the guidelines established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the standards developed by the Utah State Board of Education. My teaching uses the following core instructional documents

• World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages 
• ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (2012)
• ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners
• NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements
• Utah State Board of Education Core Standards for World Languages

To ensure maximum student learning, all classes are conducted in Spanish at least 90% of the time. This expectation is for both the teacher and the student. It is only through using the language, and making many errors, that we become proficient users of the language.
