Which Advanced Program is Right for You?

CHS students have the opportunity to pursue rigorous coursework, prepare for college academics and potentially earn college credit.

Talk with your teachers and counselor to determine the best collection of courses for you!

Concurrent Enrollment (CE)

What is it? Classes ear high school and college credit at the same time.

Classes are taught by a high school teacher with a master's degree and content is designed by the university and accessed largely online.

One-time admissions fee ($30) + $5 per credit hour.

The grade earned in the class goes on the student's college transcript.

CE Students typically:

Want guaranteed credit without the risk of high stakes testing.
Plan to attend the CE university and have a specific program in mind.
Want to free up space in their schedule as most CE classes are only a semester long.
Are interested in a specific content area (i.e. Health Professions).

Advanced Placement (AP)

What is it? Classes are advanced college courses, taught by a nigh school teacher and conclude with a cumulative exam.

Curriculum is designed by the teacher to meet College Board requirements.

Students can ear college credit through an end of year high stakes test. They must score a 3 out of 5 on the exam for credit.

Taking an AP exam is optional,

but required for college credit. The cost of each exam is 594.

Courses are a year-long and may have prerequisites.

Credit moves easily from high school to university and university to university.

AP Students typically:

Test well & excel at high stakes testing
Have a strong interest in one or two specific courses
Focus on courses that play to their strength areas.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)

What is it? Classes are advanced college courses that focus on writing, research, and inquiry instruction. IB courses are taught by an 1B Certified Instructor

Students may take up to six 18 courses in addition to Theory of Knowledge, service learning and whiting an Extended Essay.

Individual courses may be taken for college credit. The cost of exams is $119 per course.

IB students focus on global issues and giving back to the community.

Students test in all six 1B courses and can earn the 1B Diploma as well as high school diploma.

Can eam up to 30 college credit hours depending on the university.

The 1B Program is recognized internationally and is a key to admissions to Ivy League schools and the U of U's honor program.

1B Students typically:

Test well & excel at high stakes testing.
Show interest & drive in many subject areas - not just areas of strength.
Want to apply their learning to real world
